Create and Customize Buttons With the DBNavigator

Make and Customize Buttons With the DBNavigator Alright, the DBNavigator carries out its responsibility of exploring information and overseeing records. Sadly, my clients need more easy to understand understanding, similar to custom catch designs and inscriptions, ... This request originated from a Delphi engineer looking for an approach to upgrade the intensity of the DBNavigator component.â The DBNavigator is an extraordinary part it gives a VCR-like interface to exploring information and overseeing records in database applications. Record route is given by the First, Next, Prior, and Last fastens. Record the executives is given by the Edit, Post, Cancel, Delete, Insert, and Refresh catches. In one segment Delphi gives all that you need, to work on your information. Notwithstanding, as the creator of the email request likewise expressed, the DBNavigator comes up short on certain highlights like custom glyphs, button subtitles, and others. A More Powerful DBNavigator Numerous Delphi parts have helpful properties and strategies that are stamped imperceptible (ensured) to a Delphi designer. Ideally, to access such secured individuals from a part, a basic procedure called the ensured hack can be utilized. To start with, youll add an inscription to each DBNavigator button, at that point youll include custom illustrations, lastly, youll OnMouseUp-empower each button.â From the exhausting DBNavigator to both of: Standard designs and custom captionsOnly captionsCustom illustrations and custom subtitles Lets Rock n Roll The DBNavigator has a secured Buttons property. This part is a variety of TNavButton, a relative of TSpeedButton. Since each catch in this shielded property acquires from TSpeedButton, in the event that you get our hands on it, youll have the option to work with standard TSpeedButton properties like: Caption (a string that distinguishes the control to the client), Glyph (the bitmap that shows up on the catch), Layout (figures out where the picture or content shows up on the button)... From the DBCtrls unit (where DBNavigator is characterized) you read that the secured Buttons property is proclaimed as: Catches: array[TNavigateBtn] of TNavButton; Where TNavButton acquires from TSpeedButton and TNavigateBtn is an identification, characterized as : TNavigateBtn (nbFirst, nbPrior, nbNext, nbLast, nbInsert, nbDelete, nbEdit, nbPost, nbCancel, nbRefresh); Note that TNavigateBtn holds 10 qualities, each recognizing diverse catch on a TDBNavigator object. Presently, lets perceive how to hack a DBNavigator: Improved DBNavigator To begin with, set up a straightforward information altering Delphi structure by putting at any rate a DBNavigator, a DBGrid, a DataSoure and a Dataset object of your decision (ADO, BDE, dbExpres, ...). Ensure all segments are associated. Second, hack a DBNavigator by characterizing an acquired sham class, over the Form announcement, as: type THackDBNavigator class(TDBNavigator); type TForm1 class(TForm) ... Next, to have the option to show custom inscriptions and illustrations on each DBNavigator button, youll need to set up certain glyphs. You can utilize the TImageList segment and allocate 10 pictures (.bmp or .ico), each speaking to an activity of a specific catch of a DBNavigator. Third, in the OnCreate occasion for the Form1, include a call like: method TForm1.FormCreate(Sender: TObject); SetupHackedNavigator(DBNavigator1, ImageList1);end; Ensure you include the statement of this system in the private piece of the structure affirmation, as: type TForm1 class(TForm) ... privateprocedure SetupHackedNavigator(const Navigator : TDBNavigator; const Glyphs : TImageList); ... Fourth, include the SetupHackedNavigator technique. The SetupHackedNavigator technique adds custom illustrations to each fasten and doles out a custom subtitle to each fasten. utilizes Buttons;/!!! dont forgetprocedure TForm1.SetupHackedNavigator (const Navigator : TDBNavigator; const Glyphs : TImageList);const Captions : array[TNavigateBtn] of string (Initial, Previous, Later, Final, Add, Erase, Correct, Send, Withdraw, Revive);(* Captions : array[TNavigateBtn] of string (First, Prior, Next, Last, Insert, Delete, Edit, Post, Cancel, Refresh); in Croatia (confined): Captions : array[TNavigateBtn] of string (Prvi, Prethodni, Slijedeci, Zadnji, Dodaj, Obrisi, Promjeni, Spremi, Odustani, Osvjezi);*)var btn : TNavigateBtn;beginfor btn : Low(TNavigateBtn) to High(TNavigateBtn) dowith THackDBNavigator(Navigator).Buttons[btn] dobegin//from the Captions const cluster Caption : Captions[btn];/the quantity of pictures in the Glyph property NumGlyphs : 1;/Remove the old glyph. Glyph : nil;/Assign the custom one Glyphs.GetBitmap(Integer(btn),Glyph);/gylph above content Layout : blGlyphTop;/clarified later OnMouseUp : HackNavMouseUp; end;end; (*SetupHackedNavigator*) Alright, lets clarify. You emphasize through all the catches in the DBNavigator. Review that each catch is open from the secured Buttons cluster property-subsequently the requirement for the THackDBNavigator class. Since the kind of the Buttons exhibit is TNavigateBtn, you go from the main (utilizing the Low function) catch to the last (utilizing the High function) one. For each catch, you essentially evacuate the old glyph, dole out the upgraded one (from the Glyphs parameter), include the subtitle from the Captions exhibit and imprint the design of the glyph. Note that you can control which catches are shown by a DBNavigator (not the hacked one) through its VisibleButtons property. Another property whose default esteem you might need to change is Hints-use it to flexibly Help Hints based on your personal preference for the individual pilot button. You can control the showcase of the Hints by altering the ShowHints property. That is it. This is the reason youve picked Delphi! Gimme More! Why stop here? You realize that when you click the nbNext button the datasets current position is progressed to the following record. Imagine a scenario where you need to move, lets state, 5 records ahead if the client is holding the CTRL key while squeezing the catch. What about that?â The standard DBNavigator doesn't have the OnMouseUp occasion the one that conveys the Shift parameter of the TShiftState-empowering you to test for the condition of the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys. The DBNavigator just gives the OnClick occasion to you to handle.â In any case, the THackDBNavigator can essentially uncover the OnMouseUp occasion and empower you to see the condition of the control keys and even the situation of the cursor over the specific catch when clicked! Ctrl Click : 5 Rows Ahead To uncover the OnMouseUp you basically relegate your custom occasion taking care of technique to the OnMouseUp occasion for the catch of the hacked DBNavigator. This precisely is as of now done in the SetupHackedNavigator procedure:OnMouseUp : HackNavMouseUp; Presently, the HackNavMouseUp technique could resemble: technique TForm1.HackNavMouseUp (Sender:TObject; Button: TMouseButton; Shift: TShiftState; X, Y: Integer);const MoveBy : number 5;beginif NOT (Sender is TNavButton) at that point Exit; case TNavButton(Sender).Index of nbPrior: in the event that (ssCtrl in Shift) at that point TDBNavigator(TNavButton(Sender).Parent). DataSource.DataSet.MoveBy(- MoveBy); nbNext: in the event that (ssCtrl in Shift) at that point TDBNavigator(TNavButton(Sender).Parent). DataSource.DataSet.MoveBy(MoveBy); end; end;(*HackNavMouseUp*) Note that you have to include the mark of the HackNavMouseUp technique inside the private piece of the structure announcement (close to the affirmation of the SetupHackedNavigator strategy): type TForm1 class(TForm) ... privateprocedure SetupHackedNavigator(const Navigator : TDBNavigator; const Glyphs : TImageList); method HackNavMouseUp(Sender:TObject; Button: TMouseButton; Shift: TShiftState; X, Y: Integer); ... Alright, lets clarify, once again. The HackNavMouseUp strategy handles the OnMouseUp occasion for each DBNavigator button. In the event that the client is holding the CTRL key while tapping the nbNext button, the present record for the connected dataset is moved MoveBy (characterized as steady with the estimation of 5) records ahead. What? Overcomplicated? That's right. You don't have to play with this in the event that you just need to check the condition of the control keys when the catch was clicked. Heres how to do likewise in the normal OnClick occasion of the common DBNavigator: system TForm1.DBNavigator1Click(Sender: TObject; Button: TNavigateBtn); work CtrlDown : Boolean; var State : TKeyboardState; start GetKeyboardState(State); Result : ((State[vk_Control] And 128) 0); end;const MoveBy : number 5;begincase Button of nbPrior: in the event that CtrlDown, at that point DBNavigator1.DataSource.DataSet.MoveBy(- MoveBy); nbNext: on the off chance that CtrlDown, at that point DBNavigator1.DataSource.DataSet.MoveBy(MoveBy); end;/caseend;(*DBNavigator2Click*) That is All Folks Lastly, the undertaking is done. Or you can keep going. Heres a situation/task/thought for you:â Lets state you need just one catch to supplant the nbFirst, nbPrevious, nbNext, and nbLast catches. You can utilize the X, and Y parameters inside the HackNavMouseUp technique to discover the situation of the cursor when the catch was discharged. Presently, to this one catch (to govern them everything) you can append an image that has 4 territories, every region is assume to imitate one of the catches you are supplanting ... got the point?

Social Media Abuse And Addiction free essay sample

Many dangerous are associated with this condition ranging from numerous disorders such as depression or social anxiety and shockingly even a number of recorded deaths. Though technology has become a predominant part of our life, regulation or moderation is necessary because social media abuse has become more common leading to clinical depression, social anxiety, and a number of recent discoveries including (SHAM) Social media anxiety disorder and (DAD) Internet Addiction disorder. Why do individuals feel the need to share every detail about their personal life on social media sites such as Twitter or Backbone? This is the primary question being researched at Harvard University, attempting to learn more about how this affects the brain, and what motivates those who are involved in the study. Studies prove the direct relation between social media abuse and the addiction chemical known as dopamine, and the effects that it has on the brain. This response, which is triggered, provides the same reaction as positive activities such as making money, eating food, or even sexual intercourse. We will write a custom essay sample on Social Media Abuse And Addiction or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page To monitor the reactions they used advanced equipment such as a MR. machine to scan and locate the specific part of the brain that deals with his response.Researchers noticed an increased amount of abnormal activity in the frontal cortex region of the brain, the area located directly behind the eyes. This indicates an altered chemical state as compared to other forms of addiction such as heroin or alcohol abuse, providing similar results. A secondary experiment was preformed providing similar results showed that individuals gain a sense of reward when sharing a personal accomplishment, task, or ideas with others, proving empathy plays a major role in this category.Diana Tamari, the lead researcher concluded, I think the study helps o explain why people utilize social media websites so often. I think it helps explain why Twitter exists and why Backbone is so popular, because people enjoy sharing information about each other. One result from the extensive studies was the discovery of the psychological disorder known as Internet Addiction Disorder or (DAD). DAD compared to a form of substance abuse results from a similar chemical imbalance, triggered from a happy response.Typically people start out as a casual user then escalate forming a habit, spending the majority of their time on social networks, emails or other websites. It begins interfere with everyday life, including work, school, even social life, creating a second world as an escape from everyday life. Many researchers see this as an individuals way to elude stress, complications, or just to get away. A definite change of mood is observed, beginning with a chemical imbalance leading to possible outside effects on personality or motor skills. As mentioned about SHAM, individuals when confronted by licensed therapist or psychologists attempt to downplay the situation or avoid the topic similar to other chemical dependencies. A few of the negative behaviors include isolation, neglect from tidies/work or even family, and the inability to find pleasure in the real world, as defined in recoverys. Org. 90 percent of the behaviors listed were associated with other dependencies such as drugs or alcohol. Even with these statistics, why is Internet Addiction Disorder not approached with the same assertiveness and timely response as drugs or alcohol, even though the effects are exactly the same? Addiction is the key word in most of the studies conducted, concluding that many individuals are physically not able to walk away from their computers, televisions, I pads, and smartness, constantly being connected. As previously mentioned new disorders are currently being researched including Social Media Anxiety disorder or SHAM. A self-help booklet was found explaining the root causes and how to cope with the addiction when it become too much. However, again many are reluctant to admit to their addiction, no different than alcoholics. Stefan Hoffman, the director of Social Anxiety programs at Boston University explains the root of this disorder, the pressure to reads and respond on Backbone and Twitter and for younger people the stress comes from increased peer pressure as friends share perso nal information online. Individuals feel inclined to post pictures, status updates, and synopsis of every day events and in return expect a flood of response from connected individuals to fuel their anxiety. In other countries, addiction is running ramped, such as Korea where individuals are attended Social Media Boot camp to break their habits Another topic on everyones political agenda these days is the misuse of video games, and if video games create a track record of violence. Many researchers have theories that over time a violent video game can alter a persons behavior, more notably a child. The massacre at Columbine was associated with violent media, as two teens went on a killing spree at a local high school. However as of today, 90 percent of children in American still play video games without much retaliation. While studies may not conclude as of now if there is a link between violence and media, researchers are able to prove that media altars you state of mind over time. Major corporations use advertisements geared towards individuals to place ideas or wants in the brain, similar to media. A study completed surveying numerous amounts of youths concluded that the game environment and character influenced game play. Children were recorded playing certain characters such as superman and the joker. When playing a Hero, researchers noticed that the subjects tended to possess more noble characteristics such as saving lives and helping others. When playing a character such as the joker or villain, they tended to destroy or even kill others proving the hypothesis. Recent studies completed by the American Psychology Association, (PAP) have shown realistic effects cause by video games and media, overused by children. They also were able use these statistics to validate a new psychological addition known as Internet Addiction Disorder or DAD. The effects of this disorder include sickness or nausea, tremors and in some cases anxiety. Try removing a young gamer from a video game in a hurry. You will discover how difficult it is to break the attachment between the teen and the screen. (Illus.). These addicts are connected to their media on the same level as a person would be connected with a controlled substance. MR. scans now are able to show brain activity associated with the addiction leading experts to classify DAD clearly as substance abuse. Studies prove that certain characteristics are associated tit each individual such as the attempt to disconnect from real ¶y or create a getaway. In order to counter the negative media, programs have been created to inform and educate students and parents on the risks of media. They push the issue that kids today have more access at their fingertips than any other education, and with that power comes a need for knowledge. While many of these studies are directed towards adults, children are possibly even more affected by the negative effects of media. Pediatricians are working constantly educating parents, who are responsible for monitoring/ censoring content that their children are exposed to. Children are being exposed to media and content not suitable for their age, earlier and earlier in life, thanks to the advancement in advertisement, videotapes, and the ease of access to the virtual web. Some experts argue that children greatly benefit from the ease of connections to others helping develop social skills, and overall development. While this may be a valid reason, studies indicate that many students log into sights such as Backbone approximately 10 times a day, spending an average of two hours each day on this site alone. Moderation is definitely the ke y during this generation, however many parents use this to their advantage treating media as a babysitter, keeping their children engaged. While they are occupied, they are wasting valuable time that could be better spent reading, studying, or completing schoolwork, which in time is leading to a drop in scholastic achievement that is being seen throughout schools today. Statistics from a prior survey report that 97% Of parents always or sometimes are aware and monitor the games and content that their children are exposed to. However currently even adults spend the most time occupied in the virtual world. While violence is a major content concern, it may not be the most important reason while the ratings should be more closely monitored for younger adults. The top two reasons listed were that they are distracting and could possibly substitute for real life experiences. For those enrolled in school video games take the place of studying or reading a book and when homework is started, many feel too tired to focus or complete the work with the proper amount of effort. Many make the comparison between games and cartoons for e xample, however the interaction with games using a controller pulls an individual even further involved. Empathy also plays a large role in children as well when dealing with motives and making aggressive choices in certain games. When playing characters with moral characteristics such as superman, children were noticed to make more ethical choices rather than when they played evil characters such as the joker. Also particular games such as the Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty franchise rates these games as mature for specific reasons, leading to a change in mental behavior in younger children. Studies indicate that violence may not be displayed physically as in the game, but a mental change can occur addicting ids, such as adrenaline rush would to the fast action, physical games. Many questions and statements are addressed to researchers pertaining to this issue especially with children. The most common include, the children grew up in the age of technology, and know that it is only a game, able to decipher between fiction and reality. When a child plays these games, their body goes thr ough a number of changes resulting from the stress, competition, and urge to win. These changes although not visible occur with the brain which could be equivalent to a minor form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PATS) which effects their sleep pattern, and social skills. The game is designed to draw them in with the intense graphics, dramatic music, and stunning visual effects, making them unresponsive to the rest of the world. Many parents also believe they child is mature for his age and able to handle the mature material, rated by a panel of experts due to the graphic content. However many parents are not aware of the specifics of the game, unsure what their child is being exposed to and the harm that could occur. Therefore, everyone should be aware of the consequences ranging from their actions, and when a little becomes too much. Many years of research has been dedicated to solving the mysteries of how the Internet, television and cell phones are becoming peoples life. As previously mentioned this needs to begin with the children as they grow up in the info rmation age, learning the difference between moderation and abuse. Education programs should also be utilized that help inform parents and individuals of the risks and solutions. Expert opinions may always differ ranging from the benefits of media, but statistics continue to show the negative effects and visual data proving substance abuse is not only for hardcore drugs.

Respiration

Respiration RespirationRespiration is a physical process in which living organisms take in oxygen from the surrounding medium and emit carbon dioxide. the term respiration is also used to refer to the liberation of energy, within a cell. from fuel molecules such as carbohydrates and fats. Carbon dioxide and water are the products of this process, which is sometimes called cellular respiration to distinguish it from the physical process of breathing.Small organisms of the kingdoms Protista and Prokaryotae have no specialized respiratory mechanisms; instead, they rely on the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide across a cell membrane. The concentration of oxygen in the organism is less than that of the surrounding air or water, and the concentration of carbon dioxide is greater. As a result, oxygen diffuses into the organism, and carbon dioxide diffuses out.In aquatic lower animals that are more complex than sponges, a circulating medium carries the respiratory gases from outer tissues to cells that are distant from the sight of gas exchange.Anatomy of the lungs and heartThese animals have gills, which auxiliary respiratory mechanisms keep a constant current of fresh water flowing. The gases are diffused through the epithelium of the gill, and the extended surface, produced by the branching of the gills, enables large quantities of blood to be oxygenated in a short time. The respiratory and circulatory systems of air breathing animals have become adapted and modified for life in oxygen deficient environments. For example, people living in higher altitudes would have larger lungs than people living at lower altitudes. Humans respire through their lungs, as do most mammals and reptiles. Within the thorax, the lungs are held close to the body wall by atmospheric pressure. When the thorax expands, the lungs fill with air drawn through the upper respiratory passages. Relaxation of the muscles expanding...

Vaquita Facts and Conservation Information

Vaquita Facts and Conservation Information The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), also known as the Gulf of California harbor porpoise, cochito or Marsopa vaquita is the smallest cetacean. It is also one of the most endangered, with only about 250 remaining. The word vaquita means small cow in Spanish. Its species name, sinus is Latin for gulf or bay, referring to the vaquitas small range, which is restricted to coastal waters off the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Vaquitas were discovered fairly recently - the species was first identified based on skulls in 1958 and live specimens were not observed until 1985. You can read more about the vaquitas discovery here. Description Vaquitas are about 4-5 feet long, and weigh about 65-120 pounds. Vaquitas are gray, with darker gray on their back and lighter gray on their underside. They have a black eye ring, lips and chin, and pale face. Vaquitas lighten in color as they age. They also have a recognizable triangular-shaped dorsal fin. Vaquitas are shy around vessels, and typically are found singly, in pairs or in small groups of 7-10 animals. They may stay underwater for a long time. The combination of these characteristics can make vaquitas difficult to find in the wild. Classification Kingdom: AnimaliaPhylum: ChordataSubphylum: VertebrataSuperclass: Gnathostomata, TetrapodaClass: MammaliaSubclass: TheriaOrder: CetartiodactylaSuborder: CetancodontaSuborder: OdontocetiInfraorder: CetaceaSuperfamily: OdontocetiFamily: PhocoenidaeGenus: PhocoenaSpecies: sinus    Habitat and Distribution Vaquitas have one of the most limited home ranges of all cetaceans. They live in the northern end of the Gulf of California, off the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, in murky, shallow waters within about 13.5 miles of shore. Click here for a sightings map. Feeding Vaquitas feed on schooling fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Like other odontocetes, they find their prey using echolocation, which is similar to sonar. The vaquita emits high frequency sound pulses from an organ (the melon) in its head. The sound waves bounce off objects around them and are received back into the dolphins lower jaw, transmitted to the inner ear and interpreted to determine the size, shape, location and distance of prey. Vaquitas are toothed whales, and use their spade-shaped teeth to capture their prey. They have 16-22 pairs of teeth in their upper jaw and 17-20 pairs in their lower jaw. Reproduction Vaquitas are sexually mature at about 3-6 years of age. Vaquitas mate in April-May and calves are born in the months of February-April after a 10-11 month gestation period. Calves are about 2.5 feet long and weigh about 16.5 pounds at birth. The maximum known lifespan of an individual vaquita was a female who lived 21 years. Conservation There are an estimated 245 vaquitas remaining (according to a 2008 study), and the population may be declining by as much as 15% each year. They are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. One of the biggest threats to vaquitas is entanglement or being caught as bycatch in fishing gear, with an estimated 30-85 vaquitas taken incidentally by fisheries each year (Source: NOAA). The Mexican government began developing a Vaquita Recovery Plan in 2007, putting efforts into place to protect the vaquita, although they continue to be affected by fishing. Writing Assignment 2 - Essay Example The article also aimed to establish a pattern of communication between different types of groups. The study conducted by Kurz focused more on the â€Å"discussions between in-group dyads about an out-group, or a member of an out-group† (Kurz, 2009. p. 894). Technically, what Kurz wanted to achieve in his study is to understand the dynamics of communications within a given group and how this dynamics affect the individuals within and outside of the group. According to Kurz, â€Å"the prevalence of stereotypical descriptions in discussions of out-groups within in-group dyads may stem from a desire to affirm shared beliefs about the out-group†(Kurz, 2009. p. 893). In the article, Kurz described stereotyping as a means for the individual to gain favor within the group. By surveying the various communication stereotypes, the author hoped to identify useful means of communication that individuals and groups can use to gain favors from each other. In conducting the research, Kurz relied on the dyad and group discussion paradigms to get the data and other information that he needed. He also tried to investigate the ways on how narratives of group members are reproduced among the other members of the group and used effectively. In drawing his hypothesis, Kurz relied on a study of related literature that points out that those narratives about group members when communicated to other members tend to be â€Å"stripped of stereotype inconsistent information (SI), with stereotype consistent (SC) information being retained† (Kurz, 2009, p. 895). Accordingly, the stereotype consistency bias can be attributed to the communication process by which the information passes from one person to another rather than a result of general memory biases (Wigboldus, et al, 2005). In other words, as the message from an outside source is repeated within the group and is passed from one group member to another, the message now takes

Financial management - Essay Example Spencer PLC has more than 703 branches across UK in retail parks and in high streets in addition to the airports, stations and other places ranging from the flagship store and out of town over square feet of 100,000 to conventional Food Stores of 7 thousand square feet. The operating activities cash flow, the net cash gotten from the operations has been inconsistent from 666.5 M in 2009, 1601.80 M in 2010, 1197.50 M in 2011, 1443.30M in 2012, and 1236Min 2013. There was little impact of the currency movements on the sale and to the operating profit (Focardi & Fabozzi, 2004). Since the increase of the amortization the income tax reduced but this did not have any impact on the operating cash flow. The reduction in the net cash that the company earns means that the firm has less money to invest. This will subsequently lead to reduction in acquiring the assets and thus fewer dividends are declared to the investors. The cash adequacy ratio shows that the firm operating activities produces insufficient funds to meet the needed business obligations. The Spencer business has since reduced over the years which are evident from the reduction trend of the operating cash flows (â€Å"Foundations of Finance The Logic and Practice of Financial Management, Stude nt Value Edition + Myfinancelab Package†. 2010). This means that the subsidiaries are deteriorating over the years. With the above data it is clear that the net cash flow has been reducing over the last three years which is not a good sign for the company. The net investing cash flows from the investing activities have has unfavorable data which are in negative since 2009.. As outlined in the table the figures from 2009 shows a deficit of 251.7 M, 2010 showed a surplus of 253M, a deficit of 253.4 M for 2011, a deficit of 650.8 in 2012, and a deficit of 966.2 was reported in 2013. The company acquired properties, investments, equipment and

Personal Gods, Deism, & ther Limits of Skepticism :: essays research papers fc

In order to continue our discussion of the legitimate philosophical, scientific, and religious aspects of the science and religion quagmire we need a frame of reference to guide us. What I present here is an elaboration on a classification scheme proposed by Michael Shermer. (5) Shermer suggests that there are three worldviews, or "models," that people can adopt when thinking about science and religion. According to the same worlds model there is only one reality and science and religion are two different ways of looking at it. Eventually both will converge on the same final answers, within the limited capabilities of human beings to actually pursue such fundamental questions. The conflicting worlds model asserts that there is only one reality (as the same world scenario also acknowledges) but that science and religion collide head on when it comes to the shape that reality takes. Either one or the other is correct, but not both (or possibly neither, as Immanuel Kant might have argued). In the separate worlds model science and religion are not only different kinds of human activities, but they pursue entirely separate goals. Asking about the similarities and differences between science and religion is the philosophical equivalent of comparing apples and oranges. "These are two such different things," Shermer told Sharon Begley in Newsweek's cover story "Science Finds God," "it would be like using baseball stats to prove a point in football." Using Shermer's model as a starting point for thinking about S&R, I realized that something is missing. One cannot reasonably talk about the conflict between science and religion unless one also specifies what is meant by religion or God (usually there is less controversy on what is meant by science, though some philosophers and social scientists would surely disagree). So what makes Shermer's picture incomplete is the very important fact that different people have different Gods. I am not referring to the relatively minor variations of the idea of God among the major monotheistic religions, but to the fact that God can be one of many radically different things, and that unless we specify which God we are talking about, we will not make any further progress. My tentative solution to the problem is therefore presented in FIGURE 1. Here the panoply of positions concerning the S&R debate is arranged along two axes: on the abscissa we have the level of contrast between science and religion, which goes from none (same worlds model) to moderate (separate worlds) to high (conflicting worlds).

Education Philosophy Essay

The impact of religious studies on the education system is a subject that is increasingly making many education researchers and experts invest their time on, as the world goes global and multicultural education becomes popular. This subject is especially established in the higher education context, due to the interest multicultural education is increasingly raising to educationists. This paper examines the impact Islamic philosophy and Christian philosophy, the two major religious studies, have on higher education. In spite of the fact that higher education has been increasingly becoming secularized since the late nineteenth century (Roberts and Turner, 2000), the impact the Islamic and the Christian philosophy has on higher education, globally, is immense. The Islamic philosophy, a division of Islamic studies whose main aim is synchronizing the Islamic faith and reason, draws its impact on the global higher education from Islamic religious principles and teachings. This is the fundamental reason why the subject is a major tropic of interest in the education context, given the influence that Islamic teachings and practices have to the learning processes and strategies of a student. In his book, Philosophy of education: an encyclopedia, Joseph James Chambliss writes that one of the leading issues in the Islamic philosophy of education regards how religious teachings relate with secular knowledge, or other knowledge emanating from outside the Islamic religion. Religious knowledge, for instance, is recognized by Islam as the most important source of knowledge, a fact that has a dominant influence on the education system in countries such as in the Middle East, where Islam is the religion practiced by the majority. Chambliss notes that although it is common belief that religious instructions and secular instructions are distinct, imitation of religious methods and practices is often seen in secular settings (Hoosain & Salili, 2006). One way this happens is, for instance, the recitation by heart of chapters and quotations, a practice that is common in secular schools. This practice is also common in Christianity sectors, where many students imitate practices learnt in their However, certain practices and modes of culture may have adverse impacts to higher education. One feature of Islamic philosophy involves the modes of teaching religious knowledge, whereby the religious teacher is supposed to teach unchallenged by the students, who are not encouraged to raise difficult questions requiring clarification of more than technical ideas. This is because the teacher is viewed as a transmitter of knowledge that is not supposed to be challenged, and any attempts to challenge it are taken as Islamic criticism. Under such an environment, it would seem unusual for a student to have information that would be of value. This greatly discourages student participation in the class. Moreover, the student imaginative capabilities are discouraged since by the teacher being the custodian of the truth, any imaginative attempts of the students would be viewed as a distortion of the truth . the students are not supposed to another negative impact to the higher education is on (Chambliss, 1996). These ideas have a major impact on the higher education, since many students; in the global context make use of concepts and practices learnt in their formative years in their studies. The current trend in education, where more and more students are increasingly getting their higher education from overseas institutions, ensures that students are in touch with other students with such practices as aforementioned. When purchasing a product online, try to decipher if the convenience is getting in the way of common sense. However, traditional shopping does have certain plus points. Immediate gratification that local brick and mortar shops provide is still liked by many people. If you want something right away, just now, getting it from a retail store is the only option.
